Energy-Efficient Community Hall, Drymen

Client:                Drymen Church of Scotland
Value:                £800k
Date:                 Completed April 2011

A new build multifunctional annexe adjoining an existing B listed church.

The site itself has been in continuous use for Christian gatherings since the 11th century, and this presented unusual challenges as the annexe could only be located over the existing graveyard.
This has meant that the building had to ‘hover’ over the site, only touching down within the tightly controlled (and irregularly distributed) areas identified by an archaeological survey.

The proposals have proved sufficiently robust to accommodate this
challenge and also those thrown up by the internal space's multi-functional
and highly flexible nature.
