A low cost, self-build conversion of a stable to an energy efficient house.
The building is part of a farm steading in the well wooded policies of Ormiston Hall, East Lothian. In order to maximise views and exposure to the sun, it was decided to create an open plan living, dining and kitchen space on the first floor. The house is carefully designed to capture the sun's warmth using a warm air solar heating system which makes use of the entire attic as a heat gathering plenum. Sensors monitor the output of the warm air heating system, and the temperatures in the house, and when insufficient, trigger the operation of the back-up wood fired underfloor heating system. This was a self build project, with any work by outside contractors being managed by the clients themselves under a Separate Trades Contract. With: Ian Parsons Architect |
